MFMD guide · Medical director governance

Does a Medical Director need to visit the clinic in person?

The right answer depends on the facility’s actual structure, regulatory status, services, payer model, and licensed team. This guide organizes the facts that should be resolved before a decision is made.

Direct answer

There is no single universal on-site schedule for every non-AHCA practice. The right on-site involvement depends on facility type, services, staff, procedures, medication handling, and applicable rules. AHCA survey rules do create specific on-site participation requirements for licensed Health Care Clinics — but that is not automatically a rule for every practice.

01

Why does an in-person clinic assessment matter?

Even where no fixed schedule applies, a real look at the physical clinic tells the physician what remote review cannot: the physical workflow, medication storage, procedure area, staff roles, emergency systems, and escalation paths.

02

Is a hybrid on-site model a Florida legal requirement?

A hybrid model — in-person to start, remote governance after, on-site when indicated — is a sound way to work, but it is a service model, not itself a statewide legal requirement.

How to use this guide

Separate the public question from the facility decision.

First confirm the facility type, AHCA or exemption status, payer model, licensed roster, and services. Then check the current official source and document who evaluates, prescribes, orders, administers, supervises, and escalates an exception.

MFMD can structure facility governance and present the proposed services and responsibilities to a physician. Clinical authority and acceptance remain with the reviewing physician.
